Century City is in a good area of L.A. for getting places. Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus will take you almost everywhere you need to go. Century City is 15 minutes away from Santa Monica and 15 minutes away from Beverly Hills and the other shopping districts around the area. Don't be chicken to drive on the streets of L.A. -- it's really not that bad. LACMA and the LaBrea tarpits are about 15 minutes away by bus (and near Beverly Hills if you're going that way). Santa Monica has some nice shopping districts as well as the beach.
There are many, many wonderful restaurants around.
will give you a good idea of what's good and bad.
It's definitely not in the middle of nowhere...it's in the middle of West Los Angeles.

Hi! Wow, I didn't know you were here. :)
Thank you for the info. Now I have a better idea of where the (really freaking expensive) hotel is. I'm vaguely familiar with Santa Monica and its buses, and am glad it's so close to the hotel. I have been in LA twice before and had to get from Pasadena to Santa Monica via public transportation. That was not fun.
By the way, are you going to be at MLA this year? If you need a place to stay, let me know. We're ten minutes from downtown by trolley.
